Janette’s Story

In the early hours of a September morning, a fire broke out in the home of Janette, her husband Mike, and Janette’s mother Donna. The house was destroyed, and the family lost everything, including five pets. The home of their neighbor, Jim, was also impacted as the flames spread and firefighters had to remove parts of Jim’s roof and wet the house, rendering his house also unlivable.

Janette is a nurse in the town’s assisted living community. Donna and Jim work in the laundry department and maintenance department, respectively, in the local nursing home.

Nebraska’s long-term care workforce has been stretched like never before so, in 2019, Nebraska Health Care Foundation created an emergency support fund to respond to the needs of our state’s caregivers in instances like this. This fund allowed Nebraska Health Care Foundation to provide Janette, Donna, and Jim with funds to purchase personal items.

Every team member plays an important role in caring for residents of Nebraska’s nursing homes and assisted living communities.
